Today, May 1st, is May Day. The day is celebrated in different ways and has different meanings to many people, but the common denominator seems to be that most May Day celebrations involve flowers. Growing up in a Catholic school, I arrived on May Day with a limp, water soaked paper towel holding a bunch of purple lilacs, (that I was deathly allergic to). Sister Victor Mary let us place them at the feet of the Virgin Mary statue in our classroom. This was a big deal in grade school, and the 1st of May always takes me back there.

Everybody loves a holiday and most holidays we celebrate with pride or conviction, i.e. Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, Mother’s Day, Fourth of July.  But some National Holidays had apparently slipped by us unnoticed. In all my years, I have never, not ONCE, on May 4th celebrated National Candied Orange Peel Day. Have you?

DIY Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

DIY Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

mothers-day-diy-gift-ideas

We are last minute people, so coming up with ideas for Mother’s Day feels like we’re hanging out with the cool kids. You know, the ones who arrive early, are always prepared and don’t go shopping for cards the night before a celebration (not that you’d see us. Um…er…).

Mother’s Day is May 12th. Just FYI.

Art Expression Frame – Our Family Project

colton's artwork

Source: organizedCHAOSonline

This is the project that our family does for, pretty much, every occasion. I took a picture of my gift from Mother’s Day two years ago from my son, Colton.

We just purchase a picture frame with some sort of matting. We choose the thick matting  so Colton has a lot of room to express his artistic side (place stickers). It’s a fun project and there’s almost no cleanup. Now THAT’S speaking my language.

SUPPLIES:

  • Frame with matting
  • Stickers (we let Colton pick his out – regarless of their relevance to the holiday)
  • Glue
  • Art supplies

Instructions: Go to town. There’s no right way to do it. Place a photo in the middle and you’ve got yourself a gift.
