Ringing in the new year means so many things. We can look back at the year and remember the good times, take note of the lessons we learned and count the blessings we may not have noticed were blessings at the time.

Happy New Year, friends! Many well-wishes and tons of love!
You own a business.
You know about Small Business Saturday.
You have an online shop.
BUT YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO FIND YOU.
Deep breath. It’s common.
You are going to have to do a little work on your end to get the ball rollin’. Once that happens, people will catch on.
The good news? It’s all free.
10 Steps To Getting Your Business Seen This Small Business Saturday
1. SOCIAL MEDIA MAKEOVER: Make sure you have all of your social media accounts updated with your current logo (or look), your website, a good tagline or your store’s mission.
2. HASHTAG YOUR ASS OFF: Start using (or teach yourself) the hashtags #SmallBusinessSaturday and/or #SmallBizSaturday. This is what people can and will be searching for on Saturday. Plus, it gets you into the mix of all the other people doing the same thing. Hashtags work on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
3. SEARCH AND CONNECT: While you’re on social media, start searching for hashtags that apply to your product or brand. Do you sell clothing from an online boutique? Start searching #leggings #fashion #whattowear #sweater #gifts. Once you find people who have pinned, tweeted or put on Facebook about something you have – WRITE A COMMENT!
4. PROMOTE YOURSELF: Don’t be shy. This is a time for self-promotion. There’s no shame in this game. In order for your business to be successful, it has to be promoted so people know you’re here. Ask anyone and everyone to get the word out about your business.
5. BLOG: Whether you do it regularly or you remember only during times like now, write a blog. You don’t have to do in depth research, just write about what you know – your business. Include many keywords, include the words Small Business Saturday and start off your blog with a quick summary of what the blog is about. Think of how a news article is written.
6. SPRUCE UP YOUR SITE: Take a peek at your website. Is it easy to figure out who you are? Can people navigate quickly? Can they read the text? Have you included an “about me” section so people know who they are shopping with? Did you explain what you sell and why it’s the best? Do you have a “contact me” section? Do you mention shipping? All of these things are important for the new customer to know. Remember, you are very familiar with what you do but not everyone else is.
7. DISCOUNTS AND SPECIAL OFFERS: Offer a discount. Give something, anything. Perhaps you have a special gift you can add to purchase or maybe you can offer customers a discount for shopping with you on Saturday. We all love a discount…especially this time of year.
8. SHOW WHAT YOU’VE GOT: Be active. Post pictures of what you have available online. Post it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, the home page of your website, your forehead, the neighborhood, the mall Santa. WHEREVER!
9. PIN IT ALL: We’re convinced that Pinterest is magic. If you don’t have it already, add a Pin It button to your website. Just go to Pinterest and an option will become available to you (or you can look in the top menu bar of Pinterest for more). If you make a Pin It button available, others will do the work for you in spreading the word about your business. Let their passion speak to their network. This is an invaluable way to be connected with people you wouldn’t have had an opportunity to connect with otherwise. You can also pin everything from your site. We’re all in a hurry so if we can find what we’re looking for quickly, you’ve become our best friend.
10. START A GANG: Enlist the help of others you admire. There are a ton of very successful small business owners. In fact, I’d argue you can’t even call them a small business because they are doing so well. That’s the magic of the game. They technically still qualify and are kicking serious ass doing it. Ask for help. Ask for tips. Ask if they will help you grow by giving you a mention. Does that make you nervous? There are two things that would be the absolute worst case scenario: 1. You don’t get a reply. 2. They say no. Those don’t seem so bad, do they? Get to it!

This is a fun game, isn’t it? Congratulations on your future success! We’ll be playing the role of emotional parents applauding you from the sidelines.
People love playing games. Facebook provides hundreds of game “apps” to choose from. Some of you prefer to play games through Facebook, and that’s great. The only drawback to playing Facebook game apps is that, unless you adjust your game settings, all your Facebook friends get to share your successes be seeing updates on your progress. These constant updates can become really annoying to your non-playing friends, sometimes to the point that they will block you instead of blocking the game that posts your accomplishments on your behalf.
I play games on my phone, downloading the game apps from iTunes. Although I’m playing on my phone, I’m continually being offered the “opportunity” to invite my Facebook friends to have just as much fun as I’m having with this game, or let them all know that I’ve finally cleared Level 53 and have earned a power booster. Even though I’m completely fanatical about a game (frickin’ Candy Crush!), I realize that not all my Facebook friends may share my enthusiasm.
So how do you keep your friends, but make the Facebook game apps less annoying?
Meet your “gear”. This is your new best friend. When you’re on Facebook, do you see it sitting up in the top right corner? Click it. You’ve now just put yourself in the drivers seat for controlling what you will allow on your timeline, and what you’ll allow others to see of your activity on their timelines.
We can talk about all the other Facebook privacy settings later. The settings we’re focusing on right now are the games. Below you will see instructions on how to adjust privacy settings for those of you who play games, and for those of you who don’t.
1. You play games through Facebook apps, but want to keep your game playing to yourself.
(When you first choose to play your game, you’re given the option to let the app post your activity. If you missed it, and your game activity is showing up everywhere, you can still fix it. As long as you’re at it, you might want to adjust all your games settings.)
- Go to your gear and click on “Account Settings”
- On the left side, choose “Apps”
- On the App Setting list, to the right of each of the games you play, click “Edit”
- Where it says: “This App can also: Post on your behalf” click the little “x” on the right.
2. You want to block game requests from specific people.
Do you have a Facebook friend that you dearly love, but they keep sending you invitations to play Candy Crush or Bingo Bash with them? Here’s how you can block their game requests, but not block them.
- Go to Privacy Settings
- Click Manage Blocking
- Scroll to Block app invites
- Type in your friend’s name
3. You want to block everyone from sending you requests to a specific game.
It seems all your friends are playing Candy Crush (it’s addicting…have you played this game yet?), but you are sick to death of hearing about it. You can block all game requests from any game.
- Go to Privacy Settings
- Click Manage Blocking
- Scroll down to Block apps
- Type in the name of the game you want to block
If you like to deal with problems as they arise, you can block game requests a they come in. When you receive a notice that “Annoying Person” has invited you to play “Annoying Game”, click the “x”

Once you click the “x”, you’ll be asked if you really want to do this. Clicking Turn Off will stop notifications related to this app from coming into your Facebook account.

And there you have it. Carry on.
I just opened my ‘Other’ Facebook inbox today. Did you know it was there? I swear I’ve never even noticed it. Here’s the deal…
When one of your Facebook “Friends” sends you a private message (not a comment on your timeline), a red notice shows up on the little talk bubbles above your cover image letting you know you’ve got a new message.
To read your private message, you click on the bubble and it opens your inbox showing your your new messages. For all this time, my eyes apparently went directly to the picture of my message-sender and the message itself. I’d read the message, respond, then close messages. My eyes never went to that ‘Other’ box.
This extra inbox is where Facebook funnels any messages sent to you by people other than your ‘Friends’. I found a message in my Other box giving me details about my upcoming class reunion. There was also a very sweet message from an old friend who by now must think I’m a world-class bitch for not responding to him for two months!
Facebook’s explanation of this ‘Other’ inbox: “…all other messages will go into an Other folder where you can look at them separately”. Whaaat? Oh…they mean they’ve arranged it so that these ‘Other’ messages don’t get randomly mixed in with my ‘Friends’ private messages similar to how Facebook mixes their ‘Suggested Apps’ in with my newsfeed???!! Gotcha. (Does that annoy anyone else?)
It seems really weird to me that you have to look for this secret squirrel inbox and that Facebook doesn’t send you a notification when a new message arrives in this folder.
I’m certainly not here to trash Facebook. It’s solely because of good ‘ol Mark Zuckerberg, that I’ve been able to reconnect with old friends and make lots of new ones, but some of the changes, or lack thereof sometimes really has me scratching my head. But…since I wasn’t smart enough to mastermind this huge social media playground, and considering that I’m able to use it every day for free, I’ll just keep blindly updating my status, sharing great blog posts, and continue searching for tips and tricks that teach me fixes and provide explanations for the gazillion things that drive me crazy about Facebook.
What things would you like to learn about Facebook? Anything that makes you crazy? Let me know, and I’ll find an answer for you!
Watching fireworks on the 4th? We’re not all photographers, nor do we have the budget to get all the tools to capture great shots.
We have phones, our phones have cameras and we want to capture images of our fun night.
Taking Photos of Fireworks:
- Stabilize yourself so you don’t move while taking pictures. You can rest your elbows on your knees. That’s the simplest way.
- If you have an iPhone, turn your HDR mode to “on” (see image below).
- Turn off your flash.
- Download a slow shutter app (click HERE to see a list – Slow Shutter cam is very user friendly).
Start clicking away.
Oh, another tip. Don’t take pictures within Instagram because it cuts your image down. Rather, take photos with your phone’s camera and then upload to Instagram if you want to share.
Taking Photos & Writing Words with Sparklers:
- Download a slow shutter app (click HERE for the list. Slow Shutter Cam is very user-friendly). Set shutter speed anywhere between 1.5 seconds – 3.5 seconds.
- Turn off your flash.
- Use landscape mode.
- Use long-lasting sparklers (be sure to peek at the package, it will say if it is or not).
- Stabilize your hands. Resting on a table top or putting your elbows on your knees helps.
- Don’t take in Instagram. Upload your camera photos into IG later. Reason: Instagram cuts down your images and there’s risk of losing a great shot if the app closes or doesn’t upload your picture for some reason.
