Keep All Your Daily Online Tools In One Place

home page productivity and information

Every day, the first thing I look at when I log on to my computer is my home page. I have been using iGoogle for a really long time. It was so simple because I could add apps to the page that had all my blog feeds, bookmarks, entertainment news, regular news and even quick reference stories. It’s my lifeline.

Last year, Google announced that iGoogle would be going away on November 1, 2013. That seemed like forever so I didn’t think much about it. My response is typically “I’ll get to it after this…”.

Well, this Friday is November 1, 2013. Turns out, forever eventually gets here.

Naturally, I’m figuring something out very last minute. True to form, I finally try something that has been talked about for a while now, it’s easy to set up and I stay up late customizing it. That’s how I roll. The thing that has been talked about is called NetVibes.

Pre-planning just isn’t my thing. There’s no adrenaline or stress. That’s no fun.

I have just finished adding my favorite feeds (and, eh hem, entertainment news sites) to my home page.

It’s All Customizable

You can choose all your apps (feeds, information, to do lists, etc), the color of your background, the color of your header, the theme, the setup and the color of each of your app title bars. You can ALSO change the layout and it’s all drag and drop. So. Easy.

Take a Peek at My Apps

Choosing what works best for you is essential. I wouldn’t typically share what I have on my page because it doesn’t really benefit you. However, being a very visual person and someone who needs to see the “big picture” before doing anything, I thought I’d share a little peek at my home page so you can determine whether or not this is a good fit for you.

I have now set my personal NetVibes account to be my home page (see instructions below if you don’t know how to do this). Once I get used to having it, I’ll probably move things around and either add or delete apps. I can already think of things I’ll need like recipes and beauty tips. Hey, don’t judge. I am a total know-it-all. I don’t like being left out of the loop.

It’s Free

No explanation needed. Sign up for the personal account…unless you’d like to do more.

What are you using that makes online life easier?

Instructions on how to set any website as your home page:

Go to the website of your choice. May I recommend organizedCHAOSonline or our feed on Bloglovin? Oh, look at that…I just did.

Once you are currently on the site you’d like to have pop up every time you open your browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari), go to the tab at the top of your page. It’s typically on the top left. You’ll see a drop down menu. Here’s what you do next:

  • Click OPTIONS
  • You’ll see another OPTIONS. Click that.
  • You have now clicked OPTIONS and then OPTIONS
  • Under the GENERAL tab, you’ll see a section labeled STARTUP
  • Just look for “Set my home page as” and a  place to enter the web address (URL)
  • Enter the web address and click SAVE
  • Just like that, you did it.

This is what it looks like in Firefox

Save Recipes. Create a Grocery List. Get Store Specials…ZipList!

Introducing ZipList | Save Recipes. Create a Grocery List. Get Store Specials...ZipList! | organizedCHAOSonlineYou know we like to make things quick, cheap and easy here at organized CHAOS online, and this time we hit the mother load! In the past, when we shared a recipe with you, you’ve only been able to print it. You have asked us if we would include a feature that would allow you to save the recipe. You also asked if we would include a grocery list with each recipe. It’s always want, want, want with you. (Oh my gosh, we’re so kidding!!!)

We have been looking for a way to make this happen, and we finally found it. We have partnered with Ziplist. It’s a FREE web-based service that will allow you to:

  • Save our recipes to your own recipe box that you can access from our website.
  • Save recipes from other websites to your recipe box
  • Have your saved recipe ingredients added to your grocery list (which you can edit)
  • Save your favorite grocery stores, then immediately have access to their current specials
  • Create menus

There is a mobile app available for both iPhone and Android, so you can take your grocery list with you, and check items off as you buy them. I’ve used other mobile grocery lists, but Ziplist is by far my favorite. (Nope, we’re not getting a kickback from this service…we just love it!) Did I mention that it’s FREE?

So how does it work?

Tomorrow we start our “89 Days of Pumpkin” recipe series (I KNOW! We can’t wait either!). You’ll notice that our recipes now include a “Print” button, and a blue “Save Recipe” button. If you don’t need to print the recipe right away, you can click the blue “Save Recipe” button. You will then be prompted to create an account with Ziplist. It’s quick to do, and again…it’s FREE. Once you create your account, you’ll not only be able to save organizedCHAOSonline’s recipes, but recipes from a ton of other sites like  Martha Stewart, epicurious and bon appetit. All your saved recipes will end up in the same place – your personal recipe box!

Once you’ve created your account, any time you click the blue “Save Recipe” button, you’ll be able to save the recipe to your online recipe box, then add the ingredients you need to your weekly shopping list.

You can access your recipe box at any time through the “Recipe Box” link on our site.

Ziplist also provides you this cool little button that you can drag to your computer’s bookmark toolbar so you can quickly save recipes as you come across them!

Organized Lists and Notes

Organized Lists and Notes

Evernote-and-Wunderlist

We are list people. Always have been and always will be.

The thing that has changed is how we write our lists. Post-It notes are a staple in our offices but something we’ve started using (and obsessing over) are two programs that, after using for a short amount of time, will draw you into obsession as well.

Evernote

Evernote is a program both accessible via phone app and online. They sync with each other (no matter where you enter your information) and provide a TON of options for keeping track. You can copy and paste things you found online, upload images, create folders for certain subjects and add notes within that folder, search by keywords (you have put in for each subject) and about 100 more options.

What do we use Evernote for?

  • Late-night thoughts (to clear our mind)
  • Passwords
  • Links to articles we want to read
  • Images to reference

Wunderlist

Thanks to Paulina at Pretty Pink Posh, who was raving about this amazing program, we’re back on the Wunderlist bandwagon. This app/online program is the ultimate list-holder and we’re so happy to be back. Wunderlist is simply: Lists. You name your list and start adding to it. You can star an item, set notifications and edit like crazy.

What do we use Wunderlist for?

  • Grocery Lists
  • Blog ideas
  • Daily to-do items
  • Shopping List
  • Wish Lists

Our goal is to share things that are QUICK, CHEAP and EASY. Evernote and Wunderlist are all of those things.

QUICK: You write down your note once and it’s available wherever you view your note (online, phone, iPad, etc)

CHEAP: Free

EASY: If you  know how to type, you’re in luck.
